Earlier this week, I complained about Girls Generation's comeback track, "Mr. Mr." and how it didn't live up to the flawlessness of its candy coated, hip-pop schizophrenic older sister, "I Got A Boy". However, I can't seem to stop listening to it. The M/V finally dropped after having some technical difficulties in post-production.

Girls Generation's "Mr. Mr"
Remember back in January last year when Girls Generation dropped "I Got A Boy"? The genre-bending 5-in-1 song was a resounding win for K-Pop, which had become stagnate in both sound and image. SM took a big leap of faith with it and the hip-hop aegyo concept and it worked in the favor. It garnered praise worldwide, won them numerous awards including the inaugural video of the year at the YouTube Music Awards, but there were also those who couldn't take the jarring, experimental nature of the song. The Divine Nine have now dropped their fourth mini album and its title track "Mr. Mr."

The Pop Critics Top 30 Songs of 2013
Maybe the album doesn't live up to your standards, but individual tunes do. Genre-mashing, funk, throwbacks, songs with interpolations of timeless rap novelties were what the public wanted. All the songs are here in a convenient Grooveshark playlist for you. Enjoy and comment!

Homework:Defending Girls Generation's Win At The YouTube Music Awards
Girl's Generation was awarded Video of The Year for their redefining, genre mashing smash "I Got a Boy," beating out the likes of Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato. As I was going through the GG tag on Tumblr so I could find the acceptance speech, I noticed that were a lot of references to racist and rude Tweets made after the fact:
Aside from the fact that I think it's extremely hilarious that the people in these fanbases are pressed more than a good lacefront, it's disheartening as a music fan. So let me address the main arguments about why Girls' Generation deserved this award and your fave didn't.
1.It was rigged!
Your fave didn't win because your fan base didn't vote enough. Simple logic.
If your fandom is so large, so devoted and can make a trend for him/her/them every five seconds, then there is no reason why they shouldn't have snatched that award with ease. Just because they have 100 million+ views on YouTube and worldwide hits, doesn't make them entitled to anything. Plus, (no shade SONES) SM Entertainment doesn't even want to pay for a decent on location music video, what makes you think they're gonna shell out the coins for an award?
2.They aren't American!
Justin Bieber is Canadian, One Direction are from the UK. Tiffany (the girl who accepted the award) was born in America. We're not coming at your faves about where they're from so please leave the person's nationality out this. Also, do your research before you jump to conclusions. #next
3.They didn't work as hard as our faves!
Non-K-Pop fans are unaware of the process that most K-Pop idols have to go through in order to be even mildly successful. Years of dance, singing and language training while most of them are attending school on the side. They didn't get lucky because they were on some TV show or because they happened to be noticed by some big musician. They worked (bitch) for years. And Girls Generation is one of the most popular, just take at this convenient list of their accolades. (thanks to http://theonewhopostskoreanmen.tumblr.com for making that!)
A lot of people look at K-Pop as a joke rather than a legit musical genre that is acknowledged throughout the world and is growing. This was my problem with PSY's "Gangnam Style" becoming the first major K-Pop crossover. A lot of people were more about the portly Asian guy dancing like a horse with all the random stuff rather than appreciating the satire of the song itself. But as a fan of some the artists that were nominated, it's actually embarrassing. If I learned one thing, it's that music has no language barriers. K-Pop thrives on YouTube and for people to resort to racist, deprecating language to express their frustration because your fellow Bieliebers, Selenators, Lovatics, Smilers, Little Monsters and Directioners don't know how to vote, I honestly cannot. Just know that with every hateful comment, GIF set, Tweet, you're possibly exposing someone to K-Pop and it's many wonders, so in the end K-Pop wins. #staypressed
And these are tame compared to the others that followed:
But wait there's more!
Not done yet! (unfortunately...)

My Favourite Songs of 2013...Thus Far
With half of the year over and another half to go, the music has been just coming and coming and coming and...well you get the idea! Some of it good, some bad, some meh and some very exceptional. While a lot of American artists seem to be giving us the run-around with their music (a certain artist whose name begins a B and ends with a Eyonce?), other countries have been keeping their music flowing (sometimes overflowing) that I can't keep up with releases. I usually do a best of list, but since it's only the middle of year, I decided to go with some of my favourites rather than the ones that I think are the best, which can wait until December.
Girl's Day-Expectation
Girl's Day shed their quirky, side-splitting antics for a more mature concept and did not disappoint with this highly infectious dance-pop slice of heaven. It's already my most played song of the year and second most played of all time (damn you BoA for releasing "Only One.")
Nine Muses-Dolls
The classy nine get paired with Sweetune for this equally classy, jazz-inspired record. If you aren't tapping your toes to the beat, you seem to be missing a soul (or just don't like K-Pop).
Ellie Goulding-You,My Everything
This song is everything that is right with Ellie Goulding. "You, My Everything" is just Ellie's husky yet dreamy vocals over Jim Eliot's drum and bass inspired production. Just how I like her.
Girl's Generation-I Got a Boy
The hate for this song was warranted. I commend SM for breaking the Americanized cookie-cutter mold for K-Pop songs by mixing and mashing five or so songs together and transforming the divine nine into aegeyo hip-hop queens. #bowdown.
2AM Club-Black Liquor
The band laments their late night escapades over a minimalist beat fit for a The Weeknd record. If I told you that I have never cried listening to this record, I would be telling you a lie.
Rudimental-Hell Could Freeze (feat. Angel Haze)
Rudimental is a extremely versatile and "Hell Could Freeze" has to be one of their best. New York raptress Angel Haze talks about a failed relationship that she is willing to try again
Jessie Ware-Imagine It Was Us
Her solo foray into the 90s house trend that has become so popular within the past year, Jessie blesses us with her consistently sultry vocals while serving some "Queen of The Night" realness in the music video.
Supercell-The Bravery
J-Pop as I remember it from when I used to watch Anime as an awkward pre-adolesent/teen. Full of energy, heavy on the rock and a soaring inspiring chorus with so whoas and yeahs added for good measure. The five minute length is a turn off though.
Kate Nash-OHMYGOD!
Kate Nash starts this punk-pop tune languid then hits us with a stir-crazy chorus that was made for the summer and for pop radio. Too bad she's independent now.
Kanye West-Bound 2
The Kanye West that everybody was waiting for to come back. Though the lyrics are a bit iffy, it still captures perfectly who Kanye was before his "808"days.
T-ARA N4-Countryside Life
THE BEST K-POP OF 2013 SO FAR!!! Only T-ARA would have the balls to have their sub-unit come out with a netizen diss song, incorporate the real Harlem shake in the video and update Richard Simmons's ridiculous exercises. Why U Hatin'?

Graded Song: Girls Generation "I Got a Boy" + MV Review
The first big K-Pop comeback of 2013 and it had to be one of the biggest acts: SNSD! The nine previously teased their comeback with their version of Duffy's "Mercy" a la "Dancing Queen" and giving us small teasers of the song and video during the past week. At 5:00pm South Korean time, SM Entertainment unleashed the new tune upon the world. Was it worth the hype?
The video makes deciphering the structure of the song a bit difficult, as the intro starts off pretty hardcore urban, then it transitions into more familiar pop territory, then into urban electropop. If all of that is the whole song, I'm done. The song is perfect and I have nothing else to say other than the other K-Pop girls better step their comebacks up.(Update: I just listened to the studio version of the song and it is 3 different songs in one. It's perfect!!!)
Song:A-
The music video is a more colorful affair and features more hardcore street choreography than the cutesy stuff I'm accustomed to from SM.The girls seem to be taking notes from YG and their collaborations with "high fashion" designer Jeremy Scott. Overall, I think it fits the girls and I was feeling the energy from the dance part. I honestly can't wait for their promotions! I don't think the drama part of the video was necessary though.
