This year's VMAs was not one for the books. Questionable winners, Jay Pharoh effectively annoying the general public with his impressions and a performance list that didn't reflect the current trends of popular music. All that aside there were some good moments and some really meh moments. The meh outweighed the good so I kept the meh as short as possible.
The Good
Sam Smith
Sam Smith's addition to the award show could do nothing but make it better. With nothing but a pianist and a spotlight, the "Stay With Me" singer served some major Adele teas (Remember her slaying "Someone Like You" back in 2011 at the VMAs?) and showed him why he's currently at the top of his game and the charts.
Nicki Minaj
The opening to this year's show was by far the most dry in my recent memory, with Ariana Grande's shotty vocal performance and awkward childlike bouncing during "Break Free" then her and Jessie J trying to outsing each other during "Bang Bang". However, the middle was just right. Nicki channeled her inner Poison Ivy sporting an all green sequined outfit and went on to slay the first half of her infectious and controversial new single, "Anaconda". Commanding the stage and captivating the audience, she replicated the difficult exercise inspired choreo in the video, flawlessly I might add and showed Miley how real twerking is done. It was so good, she had some audience members in shock (here's to you Rita Ora).
Beyonce
King B was the recipient of the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award and for her performance, she essentially recreated the On The Run tour starting with the sappy Drake ballad and ending with the single that should of slayed the American public "XO". Best part? Katy Perry and Sam Smith singing along blow and Katy's beau Riff Raff giving a confused look when she sang turn that cherry out.
The Meh
Taylor Swift
Taylor isn't the most dynamic performer or the best live singer, but you can't shade the girl for trying. For this year's performance (she's performed 3 times I believe), she attempted a sophisticated showgirl theme and while she looked like she was having the time of her life, everyone in the audience was sipping tea while listening to the poor man's "Girlfriend", her soon to be #1 single "Shake It Off". Even her quip about Nicki's snake incident fell on deaf ears. #shakeitoff
Usher
"She Came To Give It To You" could have easily snatched as the third best performance of the night but there was too much music and not enough Usher. He also wins most awkward moment of the night, when Nicki proceeds to treat the R&B singer's head as a pinball with her booty. Can you say brain damage?
5 Seconds of Summer
The fact that MTV gave them a performance spot (more or less to get the tween crowd) on the main stage was already insulting to those this year who had larger hits and better songs, but to add insult to injury, they perform their most boring song "Amnesia". I'm surprised no one fell asleep. The again, Katy Perry wasn't onstage this year so...
Did you like this year's show? Should I have included Iggy's performance and Maroon 5's in my list?
