EXO-K
Overdose
SM Entertainment
Released: May 9th
Thanks to the Korean public, EXO went from just another idol group with some buzz to an actual threat to established K-Pop boybands. Last year's "Wolf" was a daring move by parent company SM Entertainment, which ultimately was overshadowed by Girls Generation's "I Got A Boy" in terms of western buzz. Then the "Growl" re-release came in August and overstayed its welcome way into the end of year ceremony season. " With SM finally making some legitimate bank from the half Korean, half Chinese group, "Overdose" was born. Unfortunately, the only drug that would probably match the album would be Valium or tranquilizers.
The title track, with production helmed by the same people who gave SNSD the uneventful "Mr. Mr", could be easily interchanged with the lyrics from last year's genre-bending comeback "Wolf", but instead of primal animalistic metaphors, they go for drug ones instead. A trap drum beat for good measure and it's worthy of promotions right? "Moonlight", a by the numbers slow jam, begins like it could be something good, then fizzles out by the time the harmonies find their way in. "Thunder", a military drum mixed with rap and a funky guitar "Run's" chugging bassline recalls Martin Solveig's club hit "Hello" then they go into the whole uplifting sounding chorus, which cheeses up the track to an almost unbearable level. The mini closes out with another slow jam "Love Love Love", where the rappers does the staccato-stutter thing quite well and the singers actually emphasize their vocals. "Overdose" lacks little, if any excitement and leaves the listener longing for something substantial rather than some throwaway midtempos and a sleep-inducing title track.
