July was looking like it was going to redeem the current banal state of K-Pop this year. Girls Day, B1A4, Dynamic Duo and Nu'Est dropped more than adequate tunes for my ears to genuinely enjoy. And then SISTAR and Infinite's comebacks happened...
Let's talk SISTAR's first. Capitalizing on the summer season, the foursome released "Touch My Body" (not a cover of the #1 hit by Mariah Carey). "Touch My Body" isn't a bad song, but it feels more like a Hyolyn solo song featuring the rest of the girls on backup, ironic since Soyu has the #1 song of 2014 so far. It gave me "OMG" from Hyolyn's solo album and "Bubble Pop" teas. The awkward butt dance looks like a mix of twerking prep and the pendulum dance from that one New Kids on The Block song. The sexy nature seemed more forced than ***flawless, especially when we know that SISTAR can pull off sexy with little to no effort.
Then there's INFINITE. The boys came back in May with "Last Romeo", which was at best a passable comeback song for a rookie group, but not for INFINITE. I would have rather INFINITE H dropped the album track "Alone" and they promo that and have the group release later on in the year. "Back" starts off like good ballad, the vocals are on point. (Woohyun's "can you save me's">>>life) but it never builds up and climaxes the way I expect it to. It sounds too mellow througout when it should be this bombastic dance track with highs and lows. The video also didn't help. It's pretty much the group having their asses handed to them trying to save a school girl. Mess. And if that wasn't bad enough, they come back for more at the end of the video!
